Every child and young person is unique but for families of children with SEND understanding support, services, and your rights can sometimes feel overwhelming.
SEND refers to a wide range of needs that can affect how a child learns, communicates, or experiences the world.
The SEND Code of Practice (2015) identifies four broad areas of need:
Children and young people who have difficulty with speech, language, and communication and also includes autism and speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN)
Learning difficulties that affect the ability to learn at a typical pace and can be moderate, severe, or profound learning difficulties. This also covers specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, or dyscalculia
These are needs related to emotional wellbeing, behaviour, and mental health and may include anxiety, depression, attachment difficulties, or behavioural challenges
Physical disabilities or sensory impairments that impact access to learning and include visual impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), multi-sensory impairment (MSI), and physical disabilities
We support the Parent Carers of children with SEND and we’re sure we can help you too.
Knowing what support should be available and how to access it can make a real difference to a child or young person’s experience.
Family Voice Peterborough supports families by providing information, amplifying lived experience, and working with local and health authorities to improve outcomes for children and young people.
