Building on national and local foundations
Our origins are closely linked to the Aiming High for Disabled Children programme (launched in May 2007), which aimed to improve services and opportunities for disabled children and their families. A key part of this programme focused on parent participation and ensuring that families play an active role in shaping local services.
Some of our early funding came through this programme, administered by Together for Disabled Children. Although the national programme ended in March 2011, our work continued, supported by ongoing government investment in parent participation.
Establishing a lasting presence
A major milestone in our journey was becoming a registered charity on 31 March 2011. This strengthened our ability to secure funding, grow our work, and build a sustainable future for the organisation. To facilitate our ongoing development in becoming an employing organisation, we changed our status from a charity to a charitable incorporated organisation (CIO) on 31 January 2017.
Today, Family Voice Peterborough continues to be led by Parent Carers, maintaining the same principles it was founded on:
- A committee structure with a Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer
- Leadership and decision-making driven by lived experience
- An open and inclusive forum that enables parent carers to be informed, involved, and influential at different levels
A legacy of local knowledge and lived experience
Since 2009, we have built a trusted voice within Peterborough grounded in the knowledge, insight, and dedication of local families. Our history reflects not just how we began, but our long-standing commitment to ensuring that parent carers remain at the heart of service development and decision-making.
