Parent Carer Forum

Parent Carer Participation is about working together to improve services for children and young people with SEND. It ensures that services are shaped by the lived experiences of those who use them.

It enables Parent Carer voices to be embedded at all levels of SEND locally, from information sharing through to co- development, co-design and co-production of services.

This involves working alongside professionals and service leads via Parent representation and Parent voice activity to influence the development, review and delivery of services.

Participation is underpinned by the Section 19 principles of the Children and Families Act (2014), which place a duty on public bodies to consider:

  • The views, wishes and feelings of children, young people and their families
  • The importance of their full participation in decisions
  • The need to provide the right information and support to enable participation

Being involved with us at Family Voice Peterborough as the designated DfE Parent Carer Forum for Peterborough is about improving services and enabling support for SEND families collectively.

While we cannot act on behalf of individual Parent Carers to secure specific services for individual children and young people, we can help ensure your voice plays a vital role in influencing how services are designed, delivered, and improved across Peterborough.

How to get involved

There are a range of ways you can share your views and experiences:

Your experience matters. When many families share their views, it helps build a more accurate picture of what life is really like.

The more voices we hear, the stronger the message becomes and this helps with making changes to SEND services.

Complete an online survey

We offer a “Your Say” form, which allows Parent Carers to share feedback at any time about any service or issue.

This information feeds into our wider strategic work and is reported on a regular basis to help drive change.

Sharing your experience through our surveys helps shape services and build a voice for change. Please take a moment to complete our current surveys and help improve support for families.

Live surveys

We use online surveys to enable wider participation from Parent Carers.

Our surveys may be topic specific or more generalised, and all responses are anonymous.

We bring your feedback together and work with local services across Education, Health and Social Care to highlight what is working well and where improvements are needed.

Previous surveys

Take part in discussion sessions and listening events

We host a range of sessions both in person and online to gather views, share experiences, and support connection between families.

This includes dedicated listening events, where professionals attend to hear directly from Parent Carers, respond to lived experience, and offer information, signposting, and support based on what matters most to families.

These sessions provide a welcoming space for Parent Carers to:

  • Share their experiences
  • Hear information and updates
  • Connect with others
  • Access signposting and support

Online sessions are usually held via Zoom and, where possible, recordings and accessible formats are made available.

Attend trips, activities and events where feedback will be gathered

We also gather feedback through our trips, activities and events. Feedback may be collected during booking or after attending.

We collect basic household information to help us understand who we are reaching and identify any gaps. This information is anonymised and shared with local authority partners, health commissioners and service providers to support service development and improvement.
